The comfortable, well-equipped four-bedroom home with an open fire in the living room, spacious kitchen, and patio. Located in the heart of the vibrant and characterful south Devon fishing village of Shaldon. Merchant House is conveniently situated directly on the main street, an ideal retreat in a perfect location, with private parking ( 5 minutes walking distance ), and close to the sheltered beach. This coastal retreat boasts a warm and friendly feel throughout.
Merchant House has a balance of stylish cottage with modern amenities and a nod to its history as the former Village Wine Merchant. Recently refurbished with modern fittings and decorated with Farrow & Ball colours, the space is fresh and airy, designed to meet the needs of a modern holidaying family. We have included Netflix, Britbox, and Disney subscriptions to the TVs and hope that this gives you entertainment choices. Ideal for couples wanting a comfortable break or a family who will appreciate the flexible space with a number of private areas to relax in.
There is a large open-plan Living & Dining room at the front which is perfect for comfortable relaxation after a day exploring south Devon or relaxing on the beach. The natural wood floors feature a cast iron fireplace with a wooden surround, and wood burning stove creates a cosy atmosphere. Seating, dining, and working areas are thoughtfully provided.
A large modern kitchen with granite work surfaces, white gloss cupboards, and a range cooker provides a space for informal meals and relaxing breakfasts. Café doors open out to the secluded suntrap patio allowing you to truly enjoy indoor and outdoor living.
A cosy ground floor day-room can be set up as either a single bedroom or relaxation area. Perfect for privacy or those that can’t use the stairs. This room has a modern en-suite shower room with a wash basin and WC. A digital TV and FireStick, also give the chance for privacy from the rest of the house.
The sunny patio garden is perfect for alfresco dining, barbeque, a lazy morning coffee, or relaxing evenings with a glass of wine. Separate side access to this area makes it ideal for safe storage of bikes/beach and water gear/mobility scooters etc., with an external power supply for easy charging.
First Floor
The first floor has two large bedrooms The master bedroom has a super king-size bed and uncluttered contemporary furniture, a wardrobe, a dressing table and TV. The second bedroom has twin beds which can be linked to make a further super king if needed, with wardrobe, dressing table and TV.
The bright and roomy family bathroom has a white suite with chrome fittings including a bath for relaxing soaks, a refreshing separate shower, a low-level WC, a large washbasin, and a useful mirrored vanity unit.
A separate WC with a wash basin alleviates morning queues for the bathroom. The washing machine and tumble dryer are hidden in the utility cupboard,
Second Floor
The delightful double aspect second-floor bedroom has fantastic views over the village and the estuary, across to Teignmouth at the front, and the botanical gardens and the Ness. A King-size bed, built-in hanging space, and a separate chest of drawers are provided. Sun protection glass and opening windows help keep the room cool in summer.
The heating system is automated with motion sensors and thermostats on each radiator. Towel rails can be managed independently of the heating system in the small WC and en-suite, with an electric hot air heater in the family bathroom.
I live locally and am happy to be contacted by phone. We kindly request that pets stay downstairs, do not sit on the chairs and are not left unattended.
From the charming and central location, guests can easily enjoy the wide range of local village amenities available in Shaldon; including shops, local pubs, restaurants, and numerous cafés. The fabulous beach is also just a 2 minutes level walking distance from this coastal cottage, providing the perfect place for seaside picnics, swimming, water sports, and of course the ferry that takes you across the estuary to the seaside town of Teignmouth. Shaldon is the ideal spot from which to explore the nearby coastal paths.
The town of Teignmouth is less than 2 miles away and has a train station. A passenger ferry runs between Teignmouth & Shaldon.
